Korean model can be Miss Universe at the age of 80!
Age is not a number. Choi Sun-hwa, an 80-year-old woman from South Korea, proved it. At this age, she is participating in the Miss Universe Korea pageant. Choi was born a decade before the Miss Universe pageant first began in 1952. He now holds the record as the oldest contestant in this competition.
She was introduced as one of the finalists in the Miss Universe Korea pageant earlier this September. Tomorrow, Monday, she will compete with 31 contestants to be crowned the winner of the beauty pageant. If he wins, he will have the opportunity to represent South Korea in Mexico next November.
“I want to shock the world,” Choi told CNN. Many people have questions, how can an 80-year-old stay so healthy? How does he keep fit or what kind of food does he eat? Usually weight increases with age. So I want to show how we can live a healthy life even when we are old.’
For decades, the Miss Universe organization has placed age restrictions on the pageant. Age should be between 18 and 28 years to participate in the competition. But responding to calls to modernize the competition, authorities have lifted the upper-age limit. It is effective from this year. Canada’s 58-year-old Lauryn Peters and Argentina’s Alessandra Marisa Rodriguez participated in the Miss Universe pageant at the national level this year. But none of them were considered for the final competition in November.
The organizers of Miss Universe Korea announced, as their campaign theme, that age is no limit to dreams. Apart from this, the swimwear section for this competition has also been excluded.
Choi is already a household name in the Korean fashion world. He worked in the hospital till the age of 50 and retired. Then he started modeling at the age of 72 due to financial stress. Choi said, ‘An old patient of mine asked me to get into modeling. I blew it off at first. But later I came to this case remembering the desire to fulfill the old dream.
