A piece of cake was sold for two and a half lakh rupees!
A towering cake stood at nine feet high, weighing approximately 227 kg. This colossal creation was divided into 2000 servings for the wedding attendees. A slice of this cake was priced at around two and a half lakh rupees. But this isn’t just any cake; it is known as the royal cake, the wedding cake of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip of England. Recently, a piece of this 77-year-old cake was auctioned off, fetching a remarkable 2 lakh 40 thousand rupees. It has been carefully preserved since the royal couple’s wedding in 1947. While the cake itself is no longer fit for consumption, the intricate wrapping it was stored in remains untouched.
Inside a small box adorned with silver emblems lay the cake made for the then-Princess Elizabeth. This particular slice was gifted by Buckingham Palace to Marion Paulson, a housekeeper at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland, who managed to keep it for so many years. Alongside the cake, Paulson received a personal note from the Queen, expressing her appreciation for the wedding gifts.
As reported by CNN, the cake measured nine feet in height and weighed around 227 kg. It was served in 2000 pieces to the wedding guests, with additional portions donated to charities. Moreover, a whole tier was dedicated to the naming ceremony of their first child, Prince Charles.
